Studies on alternaria Leaf Spot (a. mali Roberts) in Apple Trees (Malus domestica Borkh) : Epiphytotics , Screening Methods and Inheritance of Resistance

Abstract
Establishment of screening methods for resistant breeding materials and elucidation of the inheritance mode of the varietal resistance were attempted using a total of 27 F©û crosses among 17 parental clones. For the inheritance studies, F©û seedlings were inoculated to the expanded leaves of 2nd through 4th orders from the tip of the shoots by dropping the inoculum of Alternaria mall Su-4, a highly virulent isolate on intact surface of the lower side with the density of 10^6 spores per §¢. Results obtained are summarized as follows.
1. The segregation ratios obtained by dropping inoculation on intact leaf surface from 27 F©û crosses and 17 parental clones imply that the resistance to Alternaria leaf spot be governed by single recessive gene and this was confirmed by the data obtained from the backcrossed generations.
2. The comparison between the segregation ratios obtained by dropping inoculation on the intact leaf surface of the one year old tree and ones under the conditions of natural occurrence in the 9 year old flowering trees revealed that the ratios were well coincided in most crosses except 3 crosses including Jonathan ¡¿ Golden Delicious, concluding that resistance in juvenile phase was not changed in adult phase.
